Technology, film and games giant Sony has used this week's Gamescom event in Cologne to confirm plans for a Gran Turismo film and a new add-on to the famous racing game.

Celebrating 15 years of Gran Turismo, the new Vision GT add-on is the result of Sony partnering with a number of carmakers and designers to give gamers access to a range of 'real' and fictional concept models.

Partner carmakers in the new Vision game include Alfa Romeo, Alpine (Renault), Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, GM Design, Honda, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, Nike, Nissan, Peugeot, SRT (Chrysler) and Volkswagen.

Sony has also signed Bertone, Italdesign Giugiaro, JORDAN Brand and Zagato to its roster of concept designers.

“This is a very exciting project,” Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi said, descring the Vision add-on as a "thank you to the franchise’s loyal fan base for its successful 15-year history".

BMW chief designer Adrian van Hooydonk was also on hand for the Vision announcement, speaking of the shared passion between the Gran Turismo team and BMW's design studio.

“Gran Turismo and BMW share the mutual genes of enthusiasm for modern and classics cars. I have known the Gran Turismo series right from the beginning – the increased level of realism in visualisation and the authentic driving experience in Gran Turismo 6 is incredibly impressive," van Hooydonk said.

Vision GT will launch as part of Gran Turismo 6 in December, with new concepts joining the roster as downloadable content between 2013 and 2014.

As for the Gran Turismo film, Sony remains quiet on the details. Recent reports however suggest Sony's gaming and film divisions have partnered with the producers of the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey adaptation to develop the racing film.

It's unclear at this stage how the game's themes will translate to film and, considering the series has no real plot, the connection is likely to be a loose one.
