Smart has revealed its forward-thinking Fortwo-replacing Forvision concept ahead of the forthcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

Born out of the new platform and powertrain partnership between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the next-generation Fortwo is expected to share its underpinnings with the next Renault Twingo.

Shown here in show-car form as the Forvision, Smart's new city car concept reveals an evolution of the current Fortwo styling, blowing out the bodywork and adopting a more heavily raked A-pillar.

While the Mazda 121-like bubble body and the new front and rear lights are sure to make the transition to production, the crinkled profile will likely get an ironing before the new Fortwo hits the road.

For the Forvision concept, Smart teamed with chemical company BASF to develop new technologies, including the all-plastic wheels that weigh around 3kg less than an aluminium equivalent.

The duo also developed a new carbon fibre-reinforced epoxy resin for the passenger compartment and those origami doors.

Taking a leaf from the Fortwo Electric Drive's book, the Forvision is powered by an all-electric drivetrain, with extra energy coming from a roof-mounted solar panel.

Ultra-green urbanites can expect to see the new Fortwo hit showrooms in 2015.
