It's the Up!, Jim, but not as we know it... Skoda's Citigo city car, a lightly re-styled version of Volkswagen's Australia-bound Up!, has made its first five-door appearance this week.

Like its VW stablemate, the Citigo five-door sits on the same 2420mm wheelbase of the three-door. Interior space remains unchanged, and rear storage space is also the same at 251 litres.

This means that, with its identical interior dimensions, the five-door's practicality improvements are limited to backseaters getting their very own doors.

Still, Volkswagen expects almost two-thirds of Up! buyers to opt for the five-door version, and it's likely that Skoda's customers will lean the same way.

Both versions of the Citigo will launch with the same engines driving the Up!, including 44kW and 55kW versions of a new turbocharged and direct-injected 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

Australia

The Up! is scheduled to make its Australian debut in February, but a local launch for the Citigo remains unclear.

Speaking with TMR recently, Skoda Australia's Karl Gehling confirmed that the diminutive hatch is under consideration - in three-door form, at least.

With plans to sell 1.5 million cars annually by 2018, a sub-$15k offering in Australia could be just what the doctor ordered.
