Renault has revealed its interpretation of the future of Formula 1 racing with the RS 2027 Vision concept at the Shanghai Auto Show this week - a somewhat interesting choice given the fledgling status of the sport in China compared to F1’s more traditional venues.

The reveal location, like the concept itself, couldn’t be more important though as Renault targets its direction for the future of Formula 1 racing.

The RS 2027 Vision also aims to create a more “human-centric” championship - perhaps as a shot at criticisms that F1 racing has become to technical and sterile - placing a transparent cockpit around the driver, as well as a transparent helmet allowing online and TV spectators to monitor human reactions more closely.

As an expansion of the current KERS electrification systems Renault has halves the size of the fuel tank in the RS Vision 2027, stepping up the hybrid powerplant with a larger role for electric propulsion, including a fully electric mode to be used in pit lane.

Autonomous driving ability has also been included, though thankfully the system won’t be used in the heat of track battle, instead the self-driving system will kick in when there has been an accident, with the idea of making racers safer along with an ultra-strong cockpit canopy made of polycarbonate to protect drivers during impacts.

The idea of a more showy F1 series would be nothing without an eye-catching gimmick, and in the case of the RS 2027 Vision Renault has added active LED lighting to the wheels and moving aerodynamics to create a theoretical moving light show, particularly in the darker conditions of night races.

"One role of Renault Sport Racing is to anticipate the future of Formula 1 so that it draws a maximum number of fans in an environment consistent with Groupe Renault's objectives,” said managing director of Renault Sport Racing, Cyril Abiteboul.

"We look forward to generating inspired conversations with the racing community, fans and enthusiasts through this concept that highlights our ideas and desires."

The future of Formula 1 is currently open to discussion, with new commercial rights holders, Liberty Media expected to make a series of revisions to engine and aerodynamic regulations in preparation for the 2021 season.
