Both Holden and MINI have announced recalls over potential safety risks, with potential braking problems in the Holden JH Cruze and a potential fire hazard in the MINI Countryman and Paceman.

Holden has identified a problem with the Cruze’s supplementary electric vacuum pump, which may not function properly when the engine is cold, reducing braking performance.

Meanwhile, some MINI Countryman and Paceman models may suffer from moisture build up in the electric power steering unit, causing a fire in extreme cases.

The recall notice for the Cruze reads:

“The vehicles supplementary electric vacuum pump may not work when the engine is cold. When the engine is cold and does not have enough vacuum the braking performance of the vehicle will be reduced, which poses a potential crash hazard.”

The recall notice for the Countryman and Paceman reads:

“Moisture can penetrate the plug-in connection of the adapter cable on the Electric Power Steering - EPS. Moisture ingress may cause electro-corrosion on the contacts. In unfavourable cases, high moisture ingress may lead to the vehicle catching fire.”

Holden will be writing to affected owners shortly, but any Cruze or MINI owners who wish to find out more should contact their local dealer.
