Nissan's bizarre Murano CrossCabriolet may soon have a rival at the other end of the SUV market. According to reports out of Europe this week, Range Rover is considering a droptop version of its all-new Evoque.

Inspired more by Audi's Q5-previewing Cross Cabriolet Concept revealed in 2007 (rumoured to also be headed for production), the topless Evoque would likely be based on the existing three-door model - the most suitable option for a cabrio conversion.

While the Murano CrossCabriolet holds down the affordable sports convertible SUV segment on its own, the Evoque cabrio would assault the premium end of the market.

Whether there's any truth to the report, published by The Netherlands' Autoblog.nl, is unclear. If Land Rover is planning to let Evoque owners feel the wind in their hair, it's unlikely to hit the market until 2014 or later.

Back here in reality, the Evoque will make its Australian debut in November, arriving in both three- and five-door bodystyles - and in hardtop form only.
