Proton's Australian arm is trumpeting the features of its recently updated S16, ahead of the launch of its new Exora people-mover and Prevé flagship sedan.

While the two new models will flesh out the Proton line-up later this year, it's currently lead by the Persona sedan and the Gen.2 hatch small cars, and the $13,990 drive-away S16 FLX light car.

The addition of the 'FLX' badge this year saw the S16 given a light makeover, including updated exterior styling, with a new look to the headlights and grille, along with new bumpers and new mirrors with integrated LED indicators.

The new S16 FLX is offered in GX and GXR grades, with standard features across the range including a new seat and door fabric, along with a radio/CD/MP3 audio player with USB and auxiliary connectivity, and steering-mounted audio controls.

There's also new fog lights and new alloy wheels for both variants, while the GXR adds a leather interior trim and a rear spoiler.

Standard safety features across the range include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, dual front airbags, driver and passenger pre-tensioner seat belts and reverse sensors.

The S16 currently carries a 3-Star ANCAP crash safety rating. It should be noted however that this score, conducted in 2010, applies to earlier models that offered very few of the 2012 model's standard safety features.

Both the GX and GXR models are powered by a 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 80kW and 148Nm of torque.

Fuel consumption is listed at 6.2 l/100km with the five-speed manual and 6.5 l/100km with the continuously-variable automatic transmission.

“The S16 FLX is again a manifestation of PROTON’s commitment to provide Australians with exceptional value for money in terms of affordability in ownership, practicality, style, level of features, and safety," Billy Falconer, Proton Cars Australia GM for Sales & Marketing, said.

Pricing (drive-away)

  • S16 FLX GX Manual - $13,990
  • S16 FLX GX CVT - $15,990
  • S16 FLX GXR Manual - $14,990

Late 2012: Prevé, Exora

In the fourth quarter of this year, Proton will bring its updated Exora seven-seat compact people-mover to Australia, along with the new small Prevé sedan.

Debuting internationally in 2009, the Exora is powered by a 1.6 litre petrol engine, producing a lowly 93kW and 150Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.3 l/100km, and kerb weight is a relatively light 1422kg.
