Hoping for a more scintillating drive from the Infiniti Q50 sedan and Q60 coupe? Would a pair of twin turbo V6 engines do the trick?

Infiniti certainly hopes so, and production of its new generation lightweight 3.0 litre turbocharged V6 range has recently started at Nissan’s Iwaki plant in Japan.

The new engine range will be offered in two variants, one producing 224kW, and the other offering 298kW, stradling the Q50’s existing 268kW 3.5 litre V6 hybrid powerplant.

A part of Nissan’s VR engine range, the Infiniti VR30DDTT engine sits alongside the Nissan GT-R’s VR38DETT in the engine family tree.

“Infiniti is in the middle of a major product offensive, significantly expanding and refreshing our product portfolio,” said Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti Motor Company.

“With the new V6 engine, Infiniti vehicles will become even more powerful and more fun to drive.”

Both the Q50 and Q60 will be offered with the new twin turbo V6 engine.

Infiniti Australia has confirmed that the engine will arrive here, but is yet to confirm if we'll get both variants.

The VR30 engines feature an aluminium block with arc-sprayed mirror coating applied to the cylinder bores, lightweight resin intake and oil pan, and compact direct mount turbochargers for faster response, backed by electronically controlled wastegate actuators.

Exact timing for the new V6 models in Australia is yet to be announced, but Infiniti has previously confirmed a fourth-quarter launch for the Q60 range in Australia, and it’s likely that the new engine will appear from launch.
