Porsche is celebrating the launch of the 2013 991-model Carrera 4 with the release of a new video detailing the history of the all-wheel drive model.
The Carrera 4’s origins can be traced back to the 911-based 959 model’s Group B rally development in the early 80s.
In 1986, the system’s capability was proven straight out of the box, with the 959 finishing first and second in the Paris-Dakar Rally.
The 959 road car of 1986 briefly held the title of ‘world’s fastest production road car’, with the Sport version capable of a 315km/h top speed.
In 1989, a version of the 959’s all-wheel drivetrain was fitted to the 964 model 911 to create the first Carrera 4 model.
Carrera 4 variants have since featured through successive 993, 996, and 997-generation 911s, through to the recently unveiled 991 Carrera 4 model.
