Porsche's long-rumoured sub-Boxster performance car is apparently on track for a 2016 debut.

Known only by its internal model code of 718, Porsche's four-cylinder sports car has had a long gestation. Originally part of the aborted VW Bluesport programme, the 718 looks like it may finally be headed to the showroom.

And according to German magazine Autobild, the 718 will be light.

Thanks to extensive use of high strength steel and aluminium, the production 718 is expected to weigh under 1200kg - more than 110kg lighter than a Boxster or Cayman (pictured).

It will also only be available with a four-cylinder engine, most likely the 156kW 1.6 litre turbocharged flat-four whose specs were revealed at the start of this month.
