Peugeot's range of diesel-electric hybrid models has grown this week with the European launch of the 508 Hybrid4 sedan.

The new model joins the existing 508 Touring wagon and 508 RXH crossover hybrids, along with the earlier 3008 Hybrid4.

As with the other variants in the family, the 508 Hybrid4 sedan combines a 120kW 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine with a 28kW electric motor.

With the diesel engine powering the front wheels and the electric motor sending power to the rear, the Hybrid4 system offers four driving modes: 'ZEV' pure electric, all-wheel-drive, automatic and sport.

In Europe, Peugeot promises a combined-cycle fuel consumption rating of just 3.6 l/100km, compared to the Australian-delivered 2.0 litre diesel (5.7 l/100km) and 1.6 turbo petrol (7.1 l/100km).

Official CO2 emissions figures are also low at 95g/km, while the local 2.0 litre diesel lists at 149g/km.
