Peugeot has announced the release of its new 4008 in Australia, marking a new phase in SUV offerings for the French carmaker.

Loosely based on the HR1 concept that debuted at the 2011 Paris Auto Show, the 4008 shares its platform with the Mitsubishi ASX which, in turn, sits on the platform of the larger Outlander.

Unlike the larger 4007 SUV, which is essentially an Outlander with a Peugeot 'face' and rear, the 4008 shares only its doors and roof-panel with the ASX.

Carrying considerably tougher styling than its Japanese counterpart, the 4008 wears Peugeot's new family styling language, including the new grille design that debuted with the launch of the 508 range in 2011.

Priced from $28,990 for the 2WD manual, the 4008 will do battle with the likes of the Nissan Dualis, Honda's CR-V and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Mechanical Package

Power for the Australian-delivered 4008 will be provided for the moment by a single engine, the Mitsubishi-sourced 2.0 litre petrol four-cylinder.

Producing 110kW at 6000rpm and 197Nm of torque at 4200rpm, the engine is paired with either a five-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission, depending on the trim grade.

Two- and four-wheel-drive versions will be offered, with the latter featuring three switchable transmission modes: 2WD, 4WD and Lock, selected by a dial on the centre console (in common with the ASX).

Fuel consumption for this engine is listed at 7.7 l/100km with the front-wheel-drive manual variants, and 8.1 l/100km for the all-wheel-drive automatic. CO2 emissions are listed at 181g/km and 192g/km respectively.

Peugeot Australia has confirmed that the overseas 82kW/270Nm 1.6 litre diesel is in prospect for Australia, but with an automatic transmission currently not available, it is at least 12 months away.

The 4008 sits on a wider track, both front and rear gaining 10mm on the ASX.

The suspension package includes MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, with a Peugeot-specific tune that the carmaker promises will deliver a firmer ride and more dynamic handling.

Peugeot's new small SUV also benefits from a re-calibrated ESP and braking system, and enhanced sound proofing the doors - the latter also fitted with more weighting designed to make the doors "close like a premium European offering".

Measuring 4.34m long, 1.8m wide and 1.63m tall, the 4008 is slightly larger than the ASX, and with interior packaging offering greater space.

Rear storage is listed at 384 litres with the rear seats folded, and 1193 litres with the seats laid flat.

Features

The 4008 will be offered in two trim grades: entry-level Active and top-shelf Allure.

Standard across the range is cruise control, power windows, tinted rear windows, height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel, a chilled glovebox and a driver's foot rest.

Active models offer 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, LED lights, automatic headlights and wipers, six speakers, steering-mounted audio controls, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, electro chromatic mirror, leather trimmed steering wheel, cloth/vinyl seats, exterior chrome highlights, automatic air conditioning, cargo cover, colour multifunction display and a full sized spare wheel.

The Allure adds Xenon headlights, leather interior, 18-inch alloys, chrome side sills, power seats, a height adjustable passenger seat and heated seats.

Both models are available with the option of an integrated satellite navigation system with a full screen colour rear camera, as well as Bluetooth functionality, USB connectivity and a DVD player for $1495.

Standard safety features include seven airbags, a reversing camera (displayed in the mirror), ESC, ABS, Emergency Brake Assist, Pretensioning and force-limiting front seatbelts, three-point seatbelts all round and three rear seat child restraint anchor points.
