Opel's stable of performance-tuned offerings may soon include the new Adam city car, joining the OPC variants of the Corsa, Astra and Insignia

Website PistonHeads reports that the new Adam flagship, enhanced by the Opel Performance Centre sub-brand, would do battle with the likes of Fiat's Abarth-tuned 500 hot hatch.

In its regular form, the Adam offers a choice of 1.2 and 1.4 litre engines, delivering a maximum of 74kW. According to Adam engineering boss Dieter Metz, the little city car's chassis can handle as much power "as the current Corsa OPC".

If Opel were to bless the Adam with the quickest Corsa's powerplant, buyers would be given control of a 143kW hot hatch.

Whether the Adam OPC comes around remains to be seen, but Metz has at least confirmed that one more variant is on the way, powered by a 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo engine producing more power than the current 1.4 litre 74kW option.

As for Australia, it is unclear if the littlest model in the Opel range will join the local line-up. The brand's Australian PR boss Michelle Lang has confirmed that, for now at least, there are no plans.

"Not in the immediate future," Ms Lang said. "For now, we're focusing on establishing the announced launch range, and it's unlikely that we'll be considering other models in the next couple of years."

Opel launched in Australia this year, with the Insignia, Astra, Astra GTC and Corsa models.
