Mazda filled the hearts of race car buffs with joy and anticipation earlier this month, when the Japanese carmaker announced it was heading to the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a truckload of its favourite racing cars.

Heading the list was the 787B, which won the Le Mans 24-Hour in 1991, along with the RX-7 that won the Spa 24-Hour ten years earlier.

The lesser-known 767B prototype is also at Goodwood, and the hearts of Mazda fans will sink when they learn what has happened to it…

While fanging a timed lap on Goodwood’s famous hill climb, the 767B’s driver lost control; the prized race-car suffering substantial damage in the resulting crash.
