Victoria Police wheeled out its Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology again this week, with a four-hour operation picking up 69 unresolved infringements.

Running on Bell Street in the North Eastern suburb of Heidelberg, police used the ANPR system to detect 35 registration and 34 licence infringements.

The system also picked up an allegedly stolen MINI Cooper hatch in the final 20 minutes of the operation. The police report says the MINI had been hired earlier in the year, and never returned.

The vehicle's driver did not pull over when signalled, spurring police to make pursuit before escaping through a busy recreational park, forcing police to cancel the pursuit.

The vehicle was found abandoned, although the female driver and her male passenger were later located and arrested.

“This just goes to show how useful a tool the ANPR system is,” Senior Constable Mathew Lamb said. “A total of 69 basic traffic offences detected and a stole car recovered is a good result any day”.

Victoria's road toll currently sits at 278, up from 275 for the same period in 2010.
