NSW: New Rules For Re-registering Write-offs

The New South Wales Government has announced new rules for the registering of repaired write-offs, designed to protect consumers when buying used vehicles.

From August 1, repaired write-offs will need to gain a certificate of compliance in order to be re-registered. 

The news represents an about-turn on plans early last year to classify all New South Wales write-offs as statutory write-offs, banning them from re-registration.

“The certificate of compliance states the vehicle has been repaired to required safety standards," an RTA spokesperson said.

The changes have been developed in consultation with the Motor Traders Association, the NSW Police and the NSW Department of Fair Trading."

The new process represents a push to clamp down on the sale of severely damaged vehicles to unsuspecting buyers - many of which are repaired with stolen parts.
