NRMA Motoring & Services is calling on the New South Wales Government to release details of the revenue raised and the lives saved by the state's speed camera network.

The number and type of offences recorded, along with the number of casualties before and after the installation of a speed camera, are among the details the NRMA wants to see made public.

“With taxpayers contributing millions of dollars in fines from the state’s 172 fixed, mobile and safety speed cameras, it is only fair that information about their effectiveness in preventing road trauma is made publicly available,” NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said.

“If a safety, speed or mobile camera is persistently catching a high number of people then we need to assess the reason behind it and ensure that it is not a direct cause of poor road condition.”

Ms Machin said that the NSW Government should also commit to an annual audit of the state's camera network, and to improving signage around camera sites.

A first-ever audit of the 172 speed and red-light fixed camera network is currently underway, with the NSW Government seeking public feedback on which camera sites are a point of concern for motorists.

“We hope that the Auditor General’s report will go a long way to remove those cameras that do nothing to improve safety on our roads," Ms Machin said.
