Fresh from landing a billion-dollar contract as the next-generation New York City taxi, Nissan's NV200 van is set to begin testing in all-electric form.

Tests will kick off in Japan next month, with the first phase to include one electric e-NV200 acting as a delivery and collection vehicle for the Yokohama postal service.

"The role that can be played by zero emissions vehicles in promoting a balance between economic growth and environmental protection in the realm of logistics is large," Nissan Vice President Hideto Murakami said.

"We will reflect the customer feedback gained from these proving tests in our future product development, and I expect that our commercial electric vehicles based on the NV200 will contribute to our customers' business and to the development of a sustainable society."

Technical details for the electrified van have not been revealed, but it is likely that its drivetrain is derived from the system utilised in Nissan's electric Leaf passenger car

Although not available in Australia, the NV200 is sold as a light commercial vehicle in over 40 countries and was voted by the international transport sector as the 2010 International Van of the Year.

From 2013, specialised versions of Nissan's petrol-powered NV200 van will replace the Ford Crown Victoria, along with the 15 other models, as New York City's new taxi.
