The little i10 city car has been a strong seller in overseas markets, but its 4-Star Euro NCAP safety rating has kept it off Hyundai Australia's shopping list.

That could change in 2014 however, with reports out of Europe suggesting the next-generation i10 will target Volkswagen's diminutive Up hatch.

If Hyundai has set the Up as a benchmark for the next i10, we can likely look forward to advanced safety features and, like the Up, an Australian debut.

Reports suggest the new i10 will be slightly longer and wider than the 3565mm current model, suggesting the next-generation i20 hatch will also grow beyond its current 3940mm length.

As with the latest models in the Hyundai family, the next i10 should feature a more sporting look, with a larger grille, sharpened headlights and more prominent character lines.

Expect a range of small-capacity three- and four-cylinder petrol engines and, depending on the market, a small diesel option.

In Australia, the i10 would compete with the Up, along with the likes of the Suzuki Alto and the Holden Barina Spark.

Kia's light Picanto could also figure among its competition if Kia Australia moves to introduce it.
