The next-generation Lotus Esprit is reportedly nearing the end of development, but according to the UK's Autocar, a production schedule remains uncertain.

As the flagship model in ousted CEO Dany Bahar's planned six-car assault, the Esprit was originally set for an early 2014 debut.

Development of the other models was suspended by new owner DRB-Hicom, but the Esprit's advanced development during the changeover meant that work on the new car was allowed to continue.

Speaking with the magazine this week, a Lotus insider is reported to have confirmed the details - but added that ongoing management and budget concerns have kept production timing from being confirmed.

The new Esprit is expected to utilise a new turbocharged V8 engine that Lotus has already revealed details of, with a reported output between 425 and 460kW.

An F1-style KERS system is also expected, along with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and a carbon-fibre/aluminium construction.

Whether the Esprit will make it over the final hurdles to production, or instead is consigned to the Lotus museum, remains to be seen.
