Mitsubishi's new Mirage light car has made its market debut in Thailand this week, where it will also be produced for other global markets.

The showroom launch of the new Mirage follows its production debut at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, but our first look at the new car came with the 2010 unveiling of the "Global Small" concept.

The new light hatch will make its way to Australia later this year, following launches in Japan and Europe.

Depending on the market, power for the Mirage is provided by two 1.0 and 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol options, both featuring Mitsubishi's MIVEC technology and a stop/start system.

In 1.2 litre form, Mitsubishi promises fuel consumption figures of around 4.5 l/100km.

Mated to a CVT automatic transmission and combined with a lightweight construction and low rolling-resistance tyres, Mitsubishi says the new Mirage will offer fuel consumption figures as low as 3.3 l/100km.

The new Mirage measures in at 3710mm long, making it around 200mm longer than the tiny Suzuki Alto but 160mm shorter than the Mitsubishi Colt, for now the brand's smallest offering in most Western markets.

Australia

The new Mirage has been confirmed for an Australian debut, with a late 2012 launch expected.

"If you look at the current Mitsubishi range, we've always offered a high specification, such as the Lancer: seven airbags as standard, reversing camera availability and reversing sensors... so you can expect an impressive level of equipment for the Mirage," a Mitsubishi spokesperson told TMR.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but we can likely expect the Mirage to face off against Nissan's $12,990 Micra light car.
