Famed British brand MG is returning to Australia as Chinese parent company SAIC Motor announces plans to establish a new Australian offshoot.

Called SAIC Motor Australia, the new company will “focus on strengthening connections between the Australian and Chinese auto industries”.

The carmaker says Australia will be the base for a planned expansion program through Oceania, and that the revival of MG will be a major component of that program.

Previously, MG as we now know it arrived in Australia in 2013 with a single model, the MG6. Sales were somewhat restricted, however, as just a single dealer existed for the brand locally (located on Sydney’s Parramatta Road).

The Sydney dealer has been out of action for some time, but a relaunch for MG is planned for later this year. This time, there will be several dealers from the get-go, with more expected to join the brand in 2017.

MG has kick-started its comeback by donating an MG6 to the charity Variety (pictured, below), suggesting that the model will again be available to local customers later this year.
