REPORTS THAT MERCEDES-BENZ is considering a smaller SLS-based V8 coupe refuse to die, with more rumours this week that the German carmaker is investigating a 911 fighter.

When last we reported on the topic, reports suggested a V8 engine displacing between 5.8 to 6.2 litres would drive the coupe, built on a shortened version of the SLS platform.

Quoting unidentified insider sources, reports in the European press suggest AMG's new 5.5 litre turbo-charged and direct-injected engine will provide motivation, producing around 375kW - compared to the SLS AMG's 420kW 6.2 litre V8.

Dubbed 'SSK', the new model would switch out the SLS AMG's distinctive 'gullwing' doors, using more conventional front-hinged examples to keep price down - and likely to maintain the SLS AMG's unique style.

The new model will reportedly launch in 2014, where today's reports, if not realised, will be more easily forgotten.
