Mercedes-Benz has recalled its SLK sports model this week, due to a potential problem with the battery system.

The carmaker has identified a problem with power supply to the ignition switch, which could be interrupted.

Should the vehicle’s main battery fail, the backup battery will not supply energy to the ignition switch. This could render both the electric selector for the automatic transmission and the electronic park brake inoperable.

In this case, a driver would have no other means of securing the vehicle from movement once parked, other than to manually operate the brake pedal. Further, the driver will not be able to restart the engine.

This situation may cause a hazard to the vehicle’s occupants and other road users.

Affected models were sold between February and September last year, and a total of 15 examples are targeted by the recall.

Earlier this year, Benz also recalled various C-Class models for safety restraint issues and a potential battery grounding problem.

Mercedes-Benz will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer.
