Mercedes-Benz has revealed a special new version of the six-wheeled G-Wagon developed for the Australian Army, this time focusing on cashed-up weekend warriors.

Where the Australian forces use the formidable-enough G 320 CDI as a base, this new 6x6 is driven by the same powerplant that motivates the monstrous G 63 AMG.

In the G 63 AMG 6x6, you'll find Merc's twin-turbo 5.5 litre V8 engine, delivering 400kW and 760Nm of torque, connected to the 7G tronic seven-speed automatic transmission.

The AMG-tuned setup replaces the regular model's five-speed auto and 3.0 litre diesel V6.

The military version's all-wheel-drive system and five differential locks remain on-board however, offering 100 percent lockup of all six wheels when needed.

As a civilian model, Merc has given more thought to the G 63 AMG 6x6's styling, adding a 5876mm pickup body, along with a massive ground clearance of 460mm.

The special model promises 52 degree approach and 54 degree departure angles, and the whole thing rides on 37-inch tyres.

The 6x6's off-roading prowess cannot be disputed, proven already by its military service. Importantly for buyers though, the big AMG engine also means a sprint to 100km/h can be completed in less than six seconds.

Fuel consumption figures are understood to be in the vicinity of 18.0 l/100km, but we don't imagine many buyers will mind.

Limited-run production is expected, although pricing for the big truck is still to be announced.

Reports suggest a figure close to $1 million is likely.
