We brought you the news that Mercedes-Benz was considering the future of its CLS Shooting Brake around a fortnight ago.

A report out of the US predicted that the new CLS Shooting Brake, scheduled for 2018, would not see the light of day owing to poor sales in the key US and Chinese markets.

Instead, Benz is said to be considering a new style of four-door coupe - based on its current CLS Class (also a four-door coupe) but with styling more closely aligned to its new AMG GT.

Dubbed the ‘GT4’, this new four-door would be a rival to the Porsche Panamera and possibly perch upon the CLS’ underpinnings. This could potentially allow for a wagon version sometime after the GT4 launches.

The rumoured launch date for the GT4 is 2018, which would, of course, fit neatly with the reported end-date of CLS Shooting Brake production.
