Mercedes-Benz has a new small sedan on the way. The German carmaker hasn't made any announcements, but a CLS-inspired 'body in white' spied at Merc's Hungary plant in August has given the game away.

This week, US auto magazine Edmunds reports that the new car - expected to debut with a CLC badge - will get an unveiling at April's New York Auto Show.

The report describes the new CLC as the first model in a new push to introduce more entry-level luxury offerings in the Mercedes-Benz line-up below the existing C-Class, beyond the upcoming A-Class and B-Class hatches.

The CLS-inspired small sedan is expected to utilise a front-wheel-drive platform, with top-shelf AMG variants benefiting from all-wheel-drive grip.

Power and performance figures remain unknown, although earlier reports claim the AMG variant could offer as much as 240kW - all from a twin-turbo 2.0 litre four-cylinder engines, making it one of the most powerful production four-cylinder engines on the market.

Watch for more CLC details to surface in the coming months.
