The upcoming Need For Speed film will boast at least one advantage over the rival Fast & Furious franchise, thanks to an appearance from McLaren's new P1 hypercar.

Images released by the Mendocino County Film Office in San Francisco confirm that it will be joined by a hotted-up Ford Mustang and Porsche Cayenne, along with a Bugatti Veyron and what could be a Koenigsegg.

Based on the popular video game series of the same name, the new film's (human) stars will include Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul and Hollywood stalwart Michael Keaton.

The film will be produced by licence-owner Electronic Arts and Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks studio, giving the $4 billion franchise its big-screen debut.

Director Scott Waugh will helm the film, picked up after debuting the unique Act of Valor film that starred active Navy SEALs playing characters in a fictional story. (See trailer here.)

Tasked with developing a script from the many different storylines in the NFS universe are brothers George and John Gatins, with the latter brother's most recent work including last year's Hugh Jackman vehicle, Real Steel.

Earlier reports have suggested the script will draw on the recent Need For Speed: The Run game, which sees character Jack Rourke pursued by the mob as he races to win a $25 million prize and clear the bounty on his head.

The more recent Need For Speed: Most Wanted could also offer some inspiration for the film, with some of the world's most desireable supercars chased across a metropolitan landscape by the boys in blue.

Need For Speed is expected to hit cinemas in 2014.
