Earlier this year, Lotus promised an overhaul of its range-topping Evora before making room for its replacement, the all-new 2013 Elan

It seems things may have changed at Lotus HQ however. Reports this week suggest that the Evora will now be given a full innings.

As a result of the brand's change of heart (likely driven by the cost of developing the new Esprit), the Elan's debut will be postponed - reportedly until 2016.

US publication Car & Driver says that well-placed Lotus insiders have confirmed a "more traditional life cycle" for the Evora, with the potential even for a second generation if its coming upgrade sells well.

While there is nothing stopping Lotus from switching the Elan's badge to an Evora one, fans of the British company may prefer the return of the Elan name over the continuation of the newer Evora badge.

If the report is true and the Evora is to stay a while longer, we will likely see more powerful versions released over time (a la the hi-po Evora S), along with a convertible version.

Along with the continued Evora, the Lotus line-up will soon be joined by the all-new Esprit, with a debut for scheduled for 2013. The Esprit will become the brand's new (and supercar-priced) flagship, with the Evora targeted as more of a volume-seller.

The Esprit will be powered by a supercharged version of the 5.0 litre V8 that drives the Lexus IS F, producing 462kW in Lotus form.
