Lexus is working to build its emotional appeal with a new large coupe, according to reports out of the US this week.

As a successor to the long-gone SC 430 convertible and the SC coupe of the 90s, the new two-door would take on Audi's A5, along with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 6 Series.

American website Inside Line reports that the new model will ride on the platform that underpins the brand's GS large sedan, utilising the same rear-wheel-drive layout.

Whether the new model would enter as a two-door variant in the GS range, like the E-Class sedan and coupe twins, or as a uniquely styled model along the lines of the 6 Series, is unclear.

As with its key rivals, the new coupe would likely share its powertrains and transmissions with the GS, ranging from a 154kW 2.5 litre V6 to the more powerful 233kW 3.5 litre V6.

The arrival of a new coupe could also see the debut of a new F flagship, following in the footsteps of the V8-powered IS F sedan and opening the door for the long-rumoured GS F sedan.

The report adds that the debut of the coupe could come as soon as soon as early 2013, but until there's confirmation from Lexus, or spy a test car, we'd suggest you don't hold your breath.
