Honda won't be the only Japanese carmaker sending a sharp new concept to the Detroit Auto Show in January: Lexus has confirmed that it will reveal a future-previewing showcar at the event.

There are no details for the concept at this stage, although Lexus says the car will preview "a new design direction embraced by Lexus".

Lexus has released a teaser image to whet our appetites, revealing a complex collection of curves and corners that could belong to a new coupe - or even, dare we say it, a successor to the LFA supercar.

The concept could also offer a first look at a new third-generation IS sedan. That could be a stretch; any production version of this car is likely to be considerably more restrained than the detail of this image suggests..

As a preview of the carmaker's next styling evolution, we can likely expect to see a new take on the "spindle" grille design that has grown stronger with more recent Lexus releases - particularly on the all-new GS large sedan.

Watch for more details in the coming weeks.
