Lamborghini has no plans to turn its recently unveiled Asterion supercar concept into a showroom model, but that may not be the end of the story.

Speaking with Maxim, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann reportedly said that the Asterion would only be built if a wealthy customer made a compelling offer on a one-off special.

And even in that rare instance, the Asterion wouldn’t be powered by the 679kW petrol-electric hybrid set-up it was carrying at the Paris Motor Show, but more likely one of Lamborghini’s current petrol engines alone.

Echoing earlier comments of his that Lamborghini was not interested in building hybrid-powered cars, Mr Winkelmann said simply “we’re still not interested”.

“I strongly believe that this is not a car that will be in production and we will not do it,” Winkelmann said.

“If someone wants one, then we can do maybe one - but not with a hybrid solution, just with a normal engine. That would be the V12 from the Aventador.”

“We’re a bit pissed, I have to say, because everyone is asking me [about the design], and I love it too. I would [build] it immediately - without this [hybrid] system.”
