A long-awaited GPS satellite navigation package has made its way to the Australian Kia line-up, announced this week for the Optima sedan, and the Sorento and Sportage SUVs.

Loaded with a locally-developed software package specific to the Australian market, the system features a full-colour LG touchscreen, integrated into the dashboard's centre instrument panel.

“We have promised Australian buyers the best in design, engineering and technology and this exciting new step is again proof that we make good on our promises,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Tony Barlow, said.

“With the support of head office in Korea we can now deliver better supply of the cars Australian buyers are demanding, and with some exceptional new technology.”

With screens measuring 6.5 inches in the Sorento and 7.0 inches in the Sportage and Optima, the package offers Navteq-sourced maps, along with SUNA live traffic notifications, displaying traffic alerts and the option to plot a new route around accidents and roadworks.

Kia will also offer a new Mapcare service, bringing free map upgrades at the 12- and 24-month anniversary points after purchase - a first for carmakers in Australia.

The display also features a new large-format view for the existing reversing camera system, along with full USB/iPod MP3 compatibility.

Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone connectivity is also featured, including separate phone books for up to eight users.

As for other models in the Kia range, Kia Australia's Kevin Hepworth confirmed with TMR today that there are currently no plans to bring a satellite navigation system to any other cars in the local line-up.

Pricing

The system will feature as standard in Platinum variants, bringing a $990 premium to all three models.

In Platinum form, the Sportage is now priced at $37,710 for the petrol model, and  $40,710 for the 2.0 litre R-Series diesel model - both excluding on-road costs.

The Sorento Platinum is now priced at $50,180 plus on-roads. The package can also be ordered as an option for the SLi variants of both SUVs, priced at $1500.

The system will be available for the Sportage and Sorento from March 17.

The Optima Platinum will be priced from $37,980, with the system becoming available from mid-2012.
