One month after the first tiny-teaser of its newest SUV, Hyundai has given a second look at the Kona, the first global small SUV from the Korean brand.

Hyundai still isn’t prepared to reveal much more about its new small crossover, saying only that it will make its official debut “in the coming months”.

This second image shows a little more of the Kona’s face, which will feature Hyundai’s corporate ‘cascading’ grille, topped by a narrow mail-box opening. Most distinctive of all, the Kona’s light treatment will echo cars like the Jeep Cherokee and Citroen C4 Picasso, with high-set running light independent of the car’s main headlights.

Everything else is left to speculation for the time being, but the Kona will likely take its underpinnings from the new i30 hatch, meaning a similar drivetrain range including petrol and diesel four cylinder engines.

In line with other similar-sized competitors front-wheel drive will be standard, but all-wheel drive should be available in some variants.

The Kona name itself follows the example of the Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs, named after geological locations - in this case the Kona coastal region on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hyundai’s competitor for cars like the Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR is expected to waste no time before arriving in Australia, with a local debut expected before the end of 2017.
