Hyundai has today revealed its all-new i40 sedan, destined for sale in Europe alongside the i40 wagon revealed late last year.

The unveiling follows a single teaser image released earlier this week, along with news that Hyundai's Australian arm is considering a local launch for the new sedan.

Hyundai Australia has already confirmed plans for the i40 wagon, positioning it as a companion to the i45 medium sedan.

How the i40 would slot into the brand's local line-up remains to be seen, although an approach similar to Honda's Accord and Accord Euro models is possible.

On the styling front, the i40 draws more than a few design cues from the smaller 2012 Elantra (confirmed for Australia later this year) and the larger i45 - all three cars utilising Hyundai's 'Fluidic Sculpture' language.

Measuring 4740mm long, the i40 pulls closer to the 4820mm Australian-delivered i45. By comparison, the new Elantra measures just 4530mm from nose to tail.

Engine options for the i40 include a range of Euro V-compliant powertrains; two petrol and two diesel. Hyundai's new direct-injected 2.0 litre 'Nu' petrol engine will figure in the line-up, producing 132kW and 213Nm of torque.

Combined with a six-speed manual transmission, the 2.0 litre engine propels the i40 to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds, and fuel consumption is listed at 6.8 l/100km.

An ultra-efficient 'Blue Drive' diesel model will also be offered, its 85kW 1.7 litre engine combining with a start/stop system, alternator management system and low rolling-resistance tyres to return fuel consumption figures of 4.3 l/100km.

Standard features for the European-market i40 will include smart-parking assistant, lane departure warning, voice-recognition Bluetooth hands-free, GPS navigation and a rearview camera.

Heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and an electric parking brake round out the standout features.
