Americans can now get their hands on a hydrogen-fuelled version of Hyundai's ix35 small SUV, with the first examples having rolled onto US soil this week.

Though hydrogen fuel cell cars have been available in America before, cars like the Honda FCX Clarity have strictly been low-volume production models.

However Hyundai says the arrival of the Tucson (ix35 in Australia) Fuel Cell marks the first time a full-production fuel cell vehicle has been available in the USA.

But owners won't be able to actually buy one.

As with the FCX Clarity and other fuel cell vehicles of its ilk, the Tucson Fuel Cell will only be available under a lease program, with owners paying Hyundai US$499 per month for a maximum term of 36 months, plus a $2999 downpayment.

That lease payment does include free hydrogen fill-ups though, making the hydrogen-powered Hyundai an attractive proposition for drivers who rack up many miles.

There are other caveats though. Due to the limited number of hydrogen refuelling stations, the Tucson Fuel Cell will initially only be available to customers living around Los Angeles and Orange County in California, the Tucsons themselves won't be able to stray too far from home.
