Honda is set to launch its new 1.6 litre diesel engine in the European market, debuting in the recently launched Civic Hatch range.
Revealed in December as part of its new Earth Dreams engine family, Honda's 1.6 i-DTEC four-cylinder turbodiesel produces 88kW and 300Nm of torque.
The new engine is expected to join the Australian-delivered Civic Hatch line-up sometime in 2013, although exact timing is still to be confirmed.
Peak power for the 1.6 diesel is available at 4000rpm, and maximum twist kicks in at 2000rpm. The engine lists fuel consumption figures of just 3.6 l/100km, putting it at the more miserly end of the segment.
By comparison, Honda's older but recently revised 2.2 litre i-DTEC engine lists power at 110kW and 350Nm. Exact fuel consumption figures are still to be revealed, although the pre-update engine lists 5.2 l/100km on the combined cycle.
Honda also claims the 1.6 litre engine is the world's lightest diesel, coming in at 170kg thanks to an aluminium block, a compact turbocharger, and a focus on lightweight high-strength materials.
