The all-new Honda NSX hybrid supercar is gearing up to make its North American racing debut, although the venue may not be where you expect.

Celebrating it’s 100th anniversary this year, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will play host to not one, but two factory-backed NSX 'Time Attack' racers - wearing Honda’s luxury Acura livery.

Competing in the Time Attack 1 and 2 classes, the Pikes Peak prepped NSX’s will be piloted by James and Nick Robinson respectively, both members of Honda’s North American engineering team.

As well as the NSX pair, Honda will also be fielding an “NSX-inspired” prototype vehicle in the Electric Modified Class, featuring a further development of Honda’s four-motor Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain that won last year’s Pikes Peak Challenge Exhibition class.

“Pikes Peak is like no other race in the world and offers a unique opportunity to showcase the power and performance of our products,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura North America.

“We are excited for this year’s ‘Race to the Clouds’ to test the endurance and engineering of the Acura NSX and our advanced powertrain technologies – as well as an expression of our racing spirit.”

As well as the three competing vehicles, Acura will also supply official pace cars, with the MDX SUV, Accord-based TLX, and NSX all lining up for pace car duty.

The competing NSX TA2 car is a standard production vehicle, with the only modifications made relating to the required safety equipment for competition.

NSX TA1 utilises the production car’s three-motor Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system, twin turbo V6 and nine-speed dual clutch transmission, with modifications including a high-flow racing exhaust, and lightened chassis.

Both NSX drivers have previous Pikes Peak competition experience. The EV concept vehicle meanwhile will be piloted by Tetsuya Yamano, who drove last year’s electric CR-Z prototype racer.
