The wisdom in running the Montreal Auto Show alongside the circus in Detroit may be tough to divine, but Honda has given the Canucks a special treat for their efforts.

Unveiled this week, the GEAR concept is a study in the sub-compact or 'light car' segment, where a production version would take on the likes of the Ford Fiesta and the Toyota Yaris.

Honda says the concept is inspired by fixed-gear bicycles ('fixies'), a theme it selected in a bid to appeal to young and lifestyled-focused Gen-Y urbanites.

The GEAR's designers may also have been inspired by their earlier EV-N project, featuring a similar front-end design with a set-back headlights and grille arrangement.

The minimalist style of the GEAR is described as "simple and utilitarian, but also customizable, connected and full of personality".

“Subcompact cars are usually either utilitarian, but uninspiring or they’re fun, zippy cars that are impractical and too expensive for the Gen-Y buyer. GEAR Concept tears down those walls – it’s practical but fun, customizable, connected and affordable. Everything that young, discerning urban buyers would want in a car.”
