Holden’s Colorado 7 SUV is not long for this world, as the carmaker has announced a replacement is coming later this year.

That replacement will be the 2017 Holden Trailblazer, which sees Holden adopt the global name for the car upon which the Colorado 7 is currently based.

Previewed in concept form late March as the Chevrolet TrailBlazer Premier, the 2017 Trailblazer will adopt the same styling updates as the refreshed Colorado pickup range - also due in Australia later this year.

Further styling clues can be seen in the Chevrolet S10 pickup, which Holden has already referenced as a precursor to the next Colorado.

Holden says the Trailblazer will be “more luxurious” than the Colorado 7 it replaces, with premium style and features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range.

The Trailblazer will also bring a more refined ride, says Holden, as the carmaker looks to respond to customer feedback from the Colorado 7 SUV.

“With the redesigned 2017 Trailblazer, we have dialled up the luxury and ride comfort to offer a more premium SUV that’s comfortable and confident in urban areas, but remains just as capable for weekend adventures,” Holden’s Geraldine Davys said.

“The move to adopt the Trailblazer name emphasises the vehicle’s new direction into a more luxurious and premium space.”

Holden says the new ride comfort and features will not come at the expense of off-road ability, and the Trailblazer will still be Holden’s ‘family 4WD’. This sets it apart from the Captiva, which will remain as Holden’s volume-selling large SUV.

But the carmaker stressed that customers should not expect the Trailblazer to be a Colorado pickup with seven seats and a boot, as the premium angle sees it aimed at a different type of customer.

“Colorado has always been associated with exceptional off-road performance and Trailblazer shares that 4x4 heritage, however we expect it will be used in a very different way,” Holden’s Peter Keley said.

“Trailblazer is a 4x4, seven-seat, family adventure vehicle that is refined and smooth on the road during the school run, but still able to head off the beaten track while searching for that perfect camping spot or hidden fishing hole.”

Holden is keeping mum on the finer details for the Trailblazer at this stage, but the continued use of the current 147kW/500Nm 2.8 litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine matched exclusively with a six-speed automatic is a strong possibility.

Pricing is also unknown, but a move upmarket and more standard features may see a raise from the Colorado 7’s current $47,990 and $51,490 price-points (plus on-road costs) for the LT and LTZ models respectively.

The Colorado 7 managed 168 sales last month, leaving it behind all of its closest rivals in the ute-based large SUV market.

By comparison, Ford sold 226 Everests, Isuzu sold 531 MU-Xs, Mitsubishi sold 288 Pajero Sports and Toyota sold 381 Fortuners. Holden’s Captiva managed 823 sales, leaving it third in the large SUV segment behind only Toyota’s consistently dominant Kluger and Prado.
