Sales of General Motors’ midsized Chevrolet Malibu are reportedly down in the US, making it the only top-eight model to buck an otherwise growing segment trend.

Sales of the Toyota Camry, Kia Optima, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima and others are all up, while Malibu sales paint a lonely picture; down seven percent.

US industry paper Automotive News reports GM has responded to falling sales by offering US$3500 cash-back, among other initiatives, making the Malibu America’s ‘hottest deal’ (according to a local market analysis).

But thoughts may have already turned to the next model, with GM taking the unusual step of talking-up the next Malibu way ahead of its debut.

Rumours suggest GM will fast-track the new model, with a revised on-sale date bringing the next Malibu’s debut forward to around 12 months from now.

"We've got our act together here on the midsize segment," GM’s product development chief, Mark Reuss, said during a preview of the new model in October.

"When is the last time you saw a [midsized] car this distinctive and this dramatic from General Motors?"
