General Motors and Google may be about to throw their combined might behind a partnership to develop self-driven cars, as the technology enters a new phase.

Product development boss for GM, Mark Reuss, has hinted at a proposed partnership in an interview this week.

Mr Reuss referenced the work Google has already done with the progression of its autonomous car projects, and noted that the tech giant is looking for an automotive partner as it moves on to the next stage - despite having designed and built its own car (pictured, top of page).

Google wants a partner to help it build cars, GM wants a partner to accelerate its autonomous technology, and Mr Reuss believes the pair could form that desired partnership in the future.

“We make cars, we know how to make cars," Mr Reuss said, speaking with Bloomberg

"They've got great technical capabilities. We are very interested in how those two might work together."

There’s barely a mainstream carmaker in the market right now that isn’t investing heavily in the development of autonomous technology.
