Nice one. Ford has peeled the covers off its 2012 Formula Ford race car at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Still one of the most popular open-wheel racing classes across the globe, and offering a well-trodden path into professional motorsport, the 2012 FF race cars feature a production-based 1.6-litre Ford EcoBoost direct-injection, turbocharged engine.

Limited to 121kW and 220Nm, and mated to a six-speed sequential transmission with mechanical shift, the new engine is significantly more fuel-efficient and produces less emissions than the previous-gen car.

The tasty new body features carbon-fibre front and rear, side-intrusion protection and tubular steel space-frame chassis.

There is also an unusual skirt strangely reminiscent of the notorious but effective 'ground-effect' F1 cars of 30 years ago. This car however complies with the latest stringent FIA safety standards.

Australian aspirants will eventually be able to get their hands on one; the question of when, however, can't be answered at the moment.
