Luc Donckerwolke has been appointed as Bentley’s new design chief, replacing Dirk van Braeckel who is shifting up the ladder within Volkswagen Group design.

Donckerwolke has worked within the VW Group for 20 years, with iconic designs like Lamboghini’s Murcielago and Gallardo among his previous credits.

The Belgian has also spent time with Peugeot, Audi, Skoda, and Seat before assuming his current role as head of advanced design at Volkswagen.

His Bentley appointment is believed to precede a strategic shift for the luxury brand, likely to include expansion into other segments beyond the upcoming SUV model.

Donckerwolke’s promotion is the second key design staff change for Bentley in 2012, following the February appointment of David Hilton as head of exterior design.

Volkswagen Group design boss Walter de Silva has also hinted at such an expansion.

“(Donckerwolke’s) extensive experience makes him the ideal person to take forward Bentley’s future design language, at a time when the company has significant plans for new models”, de Silva said in a recent statement.
