The claws of the Takata airbag recall sink ever-deeper into the global automotive industry, and now, BMW in Australia has added further examples to its recall list.

The carmaker’s X5 and X6 large SUVs, sold locally been January 2007 and December 2012, have joined an expanded recall schedule.

As with other problem Takata airbags, the metal inflator unit is the subject of the recall.

Moisture absorption may cause the unit to rupture when the airbag is inflated during a collision. Should this occur, metal fragments may enter the cabin and strike the vehicle’s occupants, resulting in serious injury or even death.

The Takata issue hit home this year when a Darwin woman was injured and a Sydney man was killed in separate incidents as a result of the faulty devices.

BMW will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or phone BMW Australia on 1800 813 299.
