Ford has recalled its Focus small car in Australia this week, due to a potential problem with the fuel tank.

The carmaker has identified a weakness with the tank design which may allow excess levels of dust to be drawn into the system.

Should this occur, the carbon canister may become blocked, leading to vacuum levels beyond that tolerable by the tank.

The tank may then crack, and a resulting fuel leak could cause a fire.

Affected vehicles were built between April 2011 and September 2015, with 42,998 cars on the recall list for Australia.

Ford will attempt to contact affected owners shortly, but any owner wishing to learn more about the latest round of recalls should contact their local dealer or call Ford Australia on 1800 503 672.
