Ford B-Max Revealed Online Ahead Of Geneva Unveiling

Ford's new B-Max has made its online debut in production form this week, revealed in a new press shot ahead of its Geneva Motor Show unveiling.

Sharing its platform with the Fiesta light car, the mini people-mover that slots in - rather predictably - beneath the Focus-based C-Max. (Ka-based A-Max next, then?)

“The B-MAX combines an exciting, innovative design with features that only previously have been found in bigger cars,” Ford of Europe CEO Stephen Odell said.

“It’s a brand new car that responds to the needs of an increasing number of customers who want much more from their small cars.”

Based on the B-Max "concept" shown at last year's Geneva show, the tall hatch has lost little in its transition from showcar to production model. The chrome slats in the grille are gone, and the doors pick up a set of proper handles.

Like the concept, the production B-Max will also feature a (relatively) massive side opening - more than 1.5 metres wide, in fact - thanks to the integrated central B-pillar built into the rear doors rather than the body.

With 60/40 split-folding rear seats and with the front passenger seat laid forward, Ford says owners could cart loads up to 2.35 metres in length.

Power for the B-Max will be provided by Ford's new 1.0 litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine, which will be offered in two states of tune: an entry-level version producing 74kW, and a more powerful 92kW variant. A range of Duratorq diesel options will also feature.

An Australian debut for the B-Max has yet to be confirmed, and with a virtually non-existent market for people movers, it is unlikely we'll see the B-Max here.
