Ford Asia Pacific's Vice-President of Product Development, Tallangatta boy Trevor Worthington, confirmed that hybrid technology with a Ford badge is coming to Australia “within the next few years”.

But he remained mum on which model we might find it in.

Our tip would rest with the Mondeo and/or Kuga. Each - among its engine options - shares the same diesel drivetrain, producing a frugal but thumping 400Nm, and each has urban family buyers in its sights.

The Mondeo perhaps makes the strongest case.

A hybrid version, and later a plug-in hybrid, has been sold in the US under the Ford Fusion nameplate since 2009 (and in Europe as the Mondeo from this year).

The latter, the plug-in EV hybrid, is capable of travelling in all-electric mode for a combined fuel economy of just 2.7 l/100km. The ‘conventional’ hybrid Fusion returning 5.6 l/100km in its second generation.
