It’s official: the new speed record for an electric vehicle set by the University Of New South Wales has been recognised by the FIA.

In July, the UNSW team attempted to break a 26-year-old record for the fastest EV over a distance of 500km; set at 73km/h.

The team was playing its cards close to its chest in July, only revealing that it had broken the 100km/h barrier as it waited for the nod of approval from the FIA.

Now we can reveal the new record has been officially set at 106.966km/h over the 500km.

Driving the Sunswift eVe, the new mark was set at the Australian Automotive Research Centre at Anglesea near Geelong in Victoria, and has become the first FIA record set in Australia since 1984 (set in a production-based petrol-powered sedan).
