Ferrari has demonstrated the HY-KERS hybrid system expected to enhance its Enzo replacement, due for a private unveiling later this year.
The system combines two electric motors with a V12 petrol engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, in a mid-rear engine layout.
An earlier version of the system was first showcased in the 599 HY-KERS concept at Geneva in 2010, which used a single electric motor in a front-mid engine layout.
The latest version of the system positions one electric motor on the gearbox, assisting the V12 engine in providing drive to the rear wheels, while the second electric motor is focused on regenerating electricity.
Like the 599 HY-KERS concept, the latest version demonstrates use of slimline batteries mounted flat with the floor, spreading their weight and minimising the vehicle’s centre of gravity.
Ferrari states that its intentions for the system are to increase total drivetrain power while lowering C02 emissions by 40 percent.
Engineers also aim to add no weight or size to the drivetrain, compared with a conventional rear-mid engine drivetrain.
This goal suggests that the production vehicle will deliver the compromise-free performance and handling dynamics expected of a Ferrari flagship.
Reports suggest that the Ferrari system’s development is well progressed, with prototypes already racking up the kilometres in Europe.
